Philip Rykwalder of CAVE NOW has led explorations of caves for magazines, film and TV. One particular cave stands out for its place in history as well as its geological interest.

During WWII a band of 38 Jews hid from the Germans in a cave. They spent over a year in Orozonya Cave (known as Priests Grotto). They established code phrases, in cave bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, etc in the cave, which has since been pushed to over 78 miles long. It is a tremendous story of human survival set against the backdrop of a time period that saw over 20 million deaths globally.

Philip worked with The History Channel and A&E Theatrics on a 4 year effort to document and retell the effort. He has stories of the adventure and the meetings with actual survivors, an amazing story.

Join Cumberland Transit for a hike into Savage Gulf. We will start at the Great Stone Door entrance, hiking past the door along the rim to Alum Gap. We'll take a lunch break at the campground before descending the steep old logging road into the gulf, then hiking back along Big Creek to the Stone Door. Bring water, lunch and good hiking boots. Learn the basics of fly tying. This class will teach you to use the basic tools, use of materials, and designs for tying the flies frequently used in the Middle Tennessee area. These classes have you working with a CT Bike Mechanic to perform a complete tear-down and re-build of a bicycle. Each student receives an industry standard maintenance book and a quick-guide produced by Cumberland Transit. All students will have the opportunity to return to the bike shop for a one-on-one session with a mechanic and the student’s bike.

Randy Ratliff of Troutfishers is doing a presentation(s) on the endless fishing possibilities for East Tennessee. Troutfishers is an East Tennessee Trout Stream Fly Fishing Guide Service with vast experience and knowledge on fly fishing the eastern half of the state. There is a "formal" presentation at 1:00 PM. Troutfishers offers guided fly fishing float and wade trips in East Tennessee. Come see Randy and talk fishing!

Today we'll take two shorter hikes that are close together.

First, we make our way to the Short Springs State Natural Area for a 2.9-mile moderate trail that takes us past waterfalls and spring wildflowers. The trail runs along three different creeks, each with its own waterfall. Machine Falls, in the center of the natural area, is the tallest falls at 60 feet. The area also boasts many wildflowers, including two rarities for Middle Tennessee.

The second hike is the nearby Old Stone Fort Loop Trail. At just over 2.5 miles, this easy-to-moderate trail circles the ruins of a prehistoric Native American site. The Duck and Little Duck Rivers run along either side of the site. There are several picturesque waterfalls here, as well.
